Marine environments are punishing for materials — constant vibration, mechanical stress, and exposure to moisture and temperature swings that most 3D printed parts were never designed for. Whether you’re prototyping a fitting, a housing, or a piece of onboard equipment, a part that fails in the workshop will fail faster on the water.
Where standard filament falls short on the water
Vibration and cyclical loading are the two conditions that expose weaknesses in standard PLA fastest — brackets crack, fittings fatigue, and thin sections split along the layer lines. None of that shows up until the part is actually in use, which is exactly the wrong time to find out.
The performance case for graphene-enhanced PLA
Our SuperTough PLA is engineered specifically to hold up better under mechanical stress than standard filament:
- 25% increase in tensile strength — fittings and brackets resist the sustained load and vibration common in marine settings.
- 45% increase in strain to failure (Z-direction) — significantly better resistance to the layer-separation failures caused by vibration and cyclical stress.
- 35% increase in Young’s Modulus — structural parts keep their shape rather than flexing out of tolerance under continuous load.
- 3x thermal conductivity — useful for housings near engine compartments or onboard electronics generating heat.
Full technical figures are available on our SuperTough PLA data sheet.
Where it’s used
- Fittings and brackets for onboard equipment mounting, prototyped and tested before final fabrication in metal or composite.
- Sensor and instrument housings, benefiting from both mechanical strength and thermal performance.
- Custom tooling for maintenance and fit-out work, where standard filament wears out too quickly to be worth printing.
- Electronics prototyping — for onboard sensor or monitoring circuits, our Conductive Filament can print functional traces directly into a part.
Getting started
For structural fittings and housings, SuperTough PLA 1.75mm or the 2.85mm reel are the natural starting point.
